Today I did something interesting. I was privy to a conversation that was carried on with a fellow from an entirely different country, England to be exact, by using the internet-based program Skype. Even though I didn’t take part in the conversation, the banter being played back and forth across the Atlantic Ocean was quite humorous and I found myself laughing often. The experience made me glad that I had stumbled into the room.
I became amazed when the fellow was close to saying goodbye and he mentioned that the time where he is located is five hours ahead of ours. It's not that the time difference was unexpected, or that speaking to someone so far away is really something new. But the video aspect of the conversation, as well as the clarity of his voice over the internet, made the conversation seem so nearby. To hear him mention the time difference added a quirk, as if I was listening to someone from the future. It was one of those momentary feelings that washes over you, and adds something fun you are not expecting.
While I have known about Skype for some time, this was one of the few times I had prolonged exposure to it and I was quite happy with the experience. It made me think about starting my own Skype account and trying to meet new people from around the world. Then, of course, I will have to report back about how it goes. (Yet another experiment to add to the blogging.)
